My father wasn’t a chef, nor someone who spent much time in the kitchen—but he had a few staple recipes up his sleeve that I still treasure to this day.
Among them, my absolute favourite—his signature salad dressing.
On the rare but special Sunday afternoons we spent together as a family, my mum would spend the entire first part of the day bustling around the kitchen preparing a beautiful spread—and Dad would swoop in at the last moment to add his special finishing touch to the feast: A simple, unforgettable, delicious salad dressing that brought everything together.
He didn’t just make it—he taught me how. I remember him showing me how to mix it just right, and proudly telling me how his grandmother had taught him her “secret” recipe. And now, I am sharing it with you.
This recipe is straightforward, and you’re welcome to tweak it to your taste. What I’m sharing here is a milder version to the one I love most—mild enough for everyday meals, with optional tweaks at the end if you prefer a little extra kick.
I dub this the ‘Frank Salad Dressing’
This is his recipe, more or less as I remember it. It’s easy, adaptable, and completely fuss-free. I’ve toned it down slightly for a more subtle flavour, but I’ll include some optional add-ons at the end in case you’re after a bit more zing.
Ingredients:
- Olive oil
- Vinegar (I prefer apple cider vinegar, but any variety works)
- Salt
- Black or white pepper (or both)
- Mustard (Dad loved Coleman’s mustard powder, but any mustard will do)
Method:
Start with a basic ratio of 2 parts olive oil to 1 part vinegar—that’s the foundation.
Whisk them together gently.
Slowly add in the mustard while stirring to prevent lumps. Then season with salt and pepper to taste.
That’s it.
Simple. Sharp. Full of character—just like him.
Optional Twists:
If you’re feeling adventurous or want a bolder flavour, try adding:
- A touch of honey or maple syrup for sweetness
- A dash of lemon juice or zest
- Garlic granules or minced garlic
- A pinch of chilli flakes for heat
- Fresh herbs like parsley or dill
It’s endlessly versatile—just like all the best family recipes.
Bon Appétit!
